Decarbonisation of industry important for economic development says Iberian petrol boss
The President of Spanish fuels giant Repsol, António Brufau, said that the decarbonisation of industry and its competitiveness provided an opportunity for the economic development for the Iberian Peninsula.
The Repsol boss made his comments at the conference organised by the Repsol Foundation ‘Heading for Net Zero: Sines and the roads to the decarbonisation of industry’ which was attended by the Minister of the Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida.
“Portugal and the Portuguese government thanks Repsol for its decision to invest and place its confidence in our country with an investment of national interest that deserves full recognition”, said the minister referring to Repsol’s biggest investment in Portugal – the €657 million expansion of its Sines Industrial Complex (the “Alba Project”), aimed at creating two advanced polymer plants for 100% recyclable polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) to serve the automotive, food, and pharmaceutical sectors, marking it one of the largest industrial investments in the country in a decade, and integrating renewable hydrogen and energy efficiency.
The Sines Industrial Complex, located on the Portuguese coast South of Lisbon, begun its expansion work in March 2023 with two new plants that make the Sines Industrial Complex one of the most advanced in Europe due to its flexibility, high degree of integration, and competitiveness.
Covering 38 hectares and with an investment of €657 million, it will produce 600,000 tonnes of linear polyethylene and polypropylene per year.
