Evertis Ibérica is to build a new factory in Portalegre in Portugal’s Alentejo region to produce PET-based film.

Evertis, part of the IMG Group, specialises in producing high-barrier, multilayer PET films for food packaging (fresh produce, meat, cheese, fish) and medical applications and healthcare packaging.

The total investment stands at €39.5 million and will provide 154 direct jobs as well as getting a financial support from the Portuguese State of €11.8 million.

“The project involves the creation of an industrial unit, based in Portalegre, dedicated to the production of PET-based films with a higher content of recycled content and also with bio-based material, oriented to the needs of the packaging production industry,” an official source from Compete 2030 told the online news source ECO.

The project is considered of “special interest for the national economy” because of its structural effect for development, diversification, and internationalisation of the Portuguese economy which is why it falls into the category of Contractual Investment Regime (RCI).

The contract was approved on December 16 after the company applied for funding from the System of Incentives for Company Competitiveness under the category of Specific Regulation for the Area of Digital Innovation and Digital Transition (REITD).

The company says its focuses heavily on sustainability by incorporating recycled content (rPET) and creating fully recyclable, circular-economy-focused packaging solutions, like their IR Black films that improve sorting for recycling. They aim to extend shelf life, ensure product safety, and reduce environmental impact through innovation in materials.
