Teixeira Duarte and Ferreira to build €228 million aircraft maintenance unit for Lufthansa in Portugal
The Portuguese construction giants Teixeira Duarte and Ferreira Construção have formed a consortium to build the new Lufthansa Technik aircraft maintenance unit in Santa Maria da Feira’s Lusopark industrial park in the north of the country.
A 230,000m2 site has been acquired by the airline for aeronautics maintenance. “This strategic partnership between the two most relevant Portuguese companies in the civil construction sector bolsters confidence to achieving a large-scale and high economic impact project”, states João Moreira, the CEO of the Ferreira Group in a statement to the business daily Negócios.
The factory will focus on the maintenance, repair, and servicing of aircraft engines and respective aircraft components, placing the North of Portugal as a maintenance hub for the aviation sector.
Located on the edge of Europarque, the factory will have a 54,000m2 area with an estimated investment of €227 million and will create around 700 jobs.
Lufthansa Technik was set up around three months ago and has been training its first Portuguese engineers at rented premises to that effect at the Parque Empresarial de Recuperação de Materias (PARM) – An industrial and recycling park.
The new factory itself should be ready for operation at the end of 2027 and the company is currently in the process of recruiting a person to lead the operation.
The consortium created by the two construction companies means they are an ideal candidate to build a strategic project for Portugal and for the international aeronautics industry.
It is an industrial alliance that has arisen after the Ferreira Group became the second largest shareholder in Teixeira Duarte through Dualis Capital, a company held 50/50 with the Vila Nova de Gaia IDS Group, and which has a 9.98% capital share in the listed construction company.
Lufthansa Technik is a leading global aviation services company providing a comprehensive range of maintenance, repair, overhaul, and modification services for aircraft, engines, and components.
As a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, which is one of the airline groups interested in buying a 49% share in TAP Air Portugal, the company offers a full spectrum of services for commercial, military, and special mission aircraft through its worldwide network of over 30 international subsidiaries and dozens of locations. Its services include everything from routine maintenance to complex modifications and innovative digital solutions to ensure aircraft remain safe and operational.
