Value of wine sales in Portugal up 3.4% in value to June
Both in distribution and sales to restaurants, wine sales in the first half of the year fell in terms of the number of litres, but grew in value, with the average price rising 4.2%
Portuguese wine exports overall increased by 1.31% in volume but were down 0.48% in value with a fall in the average price of 1.76% in the national market.
According to data from Nielsen published by the Institute of Vineyards and Wine (IVV), sales of wine to June in distribution and catering in Portugal fell 0.7% in volume to June, but increased 3.4% in value with the average price increasing 4.2% per litre.
In the first six months, national market sales totalled €581.4 million and 116.3 million litres, with the average price rising from €4.8 to €5.00 per litre.
Driven by tourism, restaurants and bars continue to gain share in the distribution and sales of Portuguese wines, rising to 66.4% from a total of €386.3 million to June. Distribution overall represents 33.6% off the value of sales at €195.1 million.
In the case of supermarkets, the amount sold fell 0.1% yet the value of these sales increased 1.9%. As for restaurants, the fall in the volume of sales was sharper at 1.6%, but the increase in value was also higher at 4.2%.
The average price also rose 2% in distribution to €2.79 per litre, while in the catering trade (hotels, restaurants and bars) the increase was 5.9%, reaching €8.33.
Supermarket sales continue to represent the lion’s share of the market (60.1%) or 70 million litres, while restaurants, hotels and bars sold 46.4 million litres.
