Critical Software develops pioneering technology for Portuguese railways with Hitachi Rail
Critical Software has developed a pioneering ETCS + STM solution in Portugal designed to modernise Portugal’s rail network while meeting all European standards.
Founded in 1998, Critical Software is a multinational technology company specialised in developing software solutions and supplying IT engineering to support critical systems aimed at company security and safety.
The tech company’s latest development in the transition to the European Train Control System (ETCS) has been developed over the past three years in partnership with Hitachi Rail GTS Portugal.
The technology allows the interoperability between signal systems used throughout the Portuguese rail network, reinforcing safety, efficiency and cross border compatibility with other rail networks.
Currently, Portugal uses the CONVEL (Automatic Speed Control System) nationwide. The new STM external solution presented by Critical Software has been developed specifically for Portugal and will enable a gradual changeover to the new ETCS system, guaranteeing a smooth transition and contributing to the modernisation of Portugal’s rail network.
Compatible with different ETCS solutions, this technology reinforces the sector’s competitiveness and eases access for new operators and suppliers to a strategic segment for Portugal’s economy.
“Critical Software is committed to the future of the national railway through the development of an innovative solution that improves the safety of the operation, the longevity of the rolling stock and the competitiveness of the sector, mitigating technical barriers to the connection with the rest of Europe.
This is an essential step for railway interoperability in the country, ensuring an efficient and safe transition to the European ETCS system, to which our partner Hitachi is also committed,” says Miguel Cardoso, Business Development Director at Critical Software.
