A new data centre building on a 80 hectare site at Start Campus in Sines is being readied for construction to eventually receive 12,600 Nvidia chips shipped from the United States.

More specifically the chips are in graphic processing units brought to Portugal this year by Nscale, a London-based, vertically integrated AI infrastructure company that builds and operates sustainable GPU cloud platforms which provides high-density GPU clusters, data centers powered by renewable energy, and software solutions for training, tuning, and deploying AI models.

The data centre on the first plot is already conducting data processing from Sines in a €10Bn investment from Microsoft in Portugal. The Microsoft component will take up part of the existing data building and all of the second building once it is built at Sines Data Campus.

The Start Campus Sines 4.0 project will have a total of six buildings and will be concluded in 2031.

The first unit has been in operation since 2024 but works are still being undertaken with completion scheduled for this month.

The construction of a second building has just begun and will be completed by 2027.
