The tourism sector continued to grow in 2025 despite a slowdown registered by several sector entities.

Portugal posted 32.5 million accommodation guests and 82.1 million overnight stays in hotels, guest houses and local accommodation – an increase of 3% and 2.2%, respectively.

This compares with increases of 5.2% and 4.1% seen in 2024. The data was released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), shows that these numbers translate into revenues of €7.2Bn, a significant increase of 7.2%, and room stay income of €5.5Bn.

According to the statistical agency, it was the domestic market that boosted overnight stays, as dependence on foreign markets continued to decline throughout the year.

“Compared to 2024, there was an acceleration in the growth of overnight stays by residents (+5.4%; +2.2% in 2024) and a slowdown in those by non-residents (+0.8%; +4.9% in 2024),” it highlights, also noting that overnight stays by foreign tourists continue to predominate in the sector, accounting for 57 million overnight stays in Portugal last year, while those by national residents reached 25.1 million.
