Portugal approves minimum wage increase to €920 for 2026
Portugal’s government approved an increase in the national minimum wage by €50 in 2026 from €870 to €920 gross.
The decision was announced by the Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro on Thursday after a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday.
In a press conference at the Vila Palace in Sintra, António Leitão Amaro said that this is a “significant increase” and that in a year and a half, under PSD/CDS-PP governments, the minimum wage has increased by 100 euros.
“In a year and a half, with Luís Montenegro as prime minister, the minimum wage has increased by €100. This is part of a policy to increase the income of the Portuguese people, supported by a unique moment in the national economy,” said the government official.
The income agreement that the previous government of Luís Montenegro (PSD/CDS-PP) signed with the UGT and employers’ associations in October 2024 stipulates that the minimum wage will increase at a rate of €50 each year until 2028.
The projected values are €920 in 2026, rising to €970 in 2027 and to €1.020 in 2028.
