Army gets green light to invest €12.6 million in tactical vehicles
Portugal’s army has received the green light from the Ministry of Defence to invest €12.6 million on tactical vehicles between 2025 and 2028.
The investment will be funded via the Military Programme Law as the ministry has stressed the importance of having “equipment that can have a dual use”.
The MTVs (Medium Tactical Vehicles) and cabins are to be purchased to reinforce the capacites of ‘Forces’ and ‘Emergency Military Support’.
“As part of the diverse missions carried out by the army, it is increasingly more important to have equipment that can have a dual use, enabling them to be used through the same valances for military ends, support in the case of a catastrophe as Emergency Military Support to the population, and to support the functioning of the State (in the case of natural disasters, etc)”, states a dispatch published on Monday in the Portuguese Republic circular Diário da República.
The vehicles, manufactured by German companies like MAN, are part of a drive to modernise Portugal’s armed forces logistics and transport capabilities, thereby assuring greater efficiency, readiness and agility on diverse missions.
Models include those that have tow and crane adaptations, or for general transport of equipment and personnel.
The total amount to be invested between 2025 and 2028 may not exceed €11,515,477. 96 in 2025; €986,937 in 2026, €50,000 in 2027, and the same latter amount in 2028.
The cost of MAN 6×6 military trucks varies wildly, from around €9,000 (US$10,000+) for older, used models like the MAN 630, to potentially tens of thousands for slightly newer Kat1 series, while modern, specialised, or new models (like MAN HX series or heavily configured variants) often run into the hundreds of thousands or even millions for armoured/specialised versions, with prices on marketplaces showing used models from under $20k to over $50k, and new/modern options listed as “Price on Request”.
For new, high-spec, armoured, or highly customised MAN 6x6s, price tags can be in the US$100,000s to millions, often requiring direct inquiry with MAN Defense or authorised dealers for precise figures.
