Portugal’s political parties have submitted 2,176 proposals to amend the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026), a new record, according to the information available on the website of the Assembly of the Republic.

This was the number of proposals that had been submitted by 8:30am on Sunday after the deadline was extended, originally scheduled for 6:00 pm on Friday. There were more than 25 proposals than were available on Saturday morning.

According to the same data, the PSD/CDS-PP delivered 57 proposals, Chega a massive 614, the PS 117, Initiative Liberal 112, Livre 330, PCP 532, Bloco Esquerda 181, PAN 182 and JPP 50.

At the hearing on the subject last week, the Minister of Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, referred to the “proposed amendments that the different parliamentary groups have already presented or will still present during the course of today [Friday, Nov 7)]”, saying that it was up to the MPs to know whether they wanted to keep the budget as proposed, with a surplus of 0.1% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that will allow “0.8% of GDP to be executed from RRP loans”, or if they preferred not to have a surplus.

Last year, a record number of amendment proposals was also reached, when the parties submitted 2,123 proposals.
