Portuguese State’s take-up of AI could net €1.2Bn annually

The Portuguese State’s adoption of Generative AI has the potential to increase productivity in its public administration according to a study ordered by Google on the situation in Portugal.

“Generative AI has significant potential to increase productivity in Public Administration in Portugal, creating a 9% higher cost-benefit ratio, equivalent to an annual contribution of €1.2Bn,” is one of the main conclusions of the study “The AI opportunity for eGoverment in Portugal.”

The study on the economic impact from applying Generative AI to the Portuguese public sector was ordered by Google from the Implement Consulting Group and Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics.

The report also says that “average productivity per professional in the public sector could be as much as 9% higher over the next 10 years.

For two-thirds of the public sector workforce (about 200,000 jobs), generative artificial intelligence technology could improve a significant part of their tasks, which makes its integration into daily processes feasible.

The report also shows that more than half of Portuguese public sector workers already use AI tools and 80% believe they will be important in the next 10 years.
