Spanish negotiate purchase of BNI Europa
Digiital bank BNI Europa has a new potential buyer – a Spanish bank rumored from non-confirmed sources to be Caja da Extremadura with an agreement likely to be announced shortly.
The Bank of Portugal has not been advised of the Purchase and Sale Contract for BNI Europe. In any eventuality, if announced, the Bank of Portugal would have to send the process to the European Central Bank (ECB) for authorisation.
The Portuguese BNI Europa, owned by the Angolan bank BNI, has been up for sale since 2019, but the various attempts to sell it have failed so far.
According to the bank’s 2024 Report and Accounts – where BNI Europe reports that it went from profits of €421.000 in 2023 to a loss of €1.8 million last year – the shareholder maintains an interest in the sale of its shareholder position “with relevant actions underway for this purpose at an advanced stage”.
BNI Europa is a “challenger bank” that functions as a digital-only bank focused on innovation and strategic partnerships with fintech firms to offer competitive and innovative financial products and services.
It provides alternative credit solutions, term deposits, and investment funds, emphasising a digital platform with low costs and a strong focus on customer experience and building trust with clients and partners, according to the Banco BNI Europa website.
