Álvaro Santos Pereira will be officially sworn in as the new governor of the Bank of Portugal on Monday.

On Friday, the government officially nominated the former Head Economist at the OECD as governor and the ex-Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho (PSD) to head the central bank.

At the end of September, the members of the Budget, Finance and Public Administration Committee (COFAP) approved, by a majority, the report of the hearing of Álvaro Santos Pereira on his appointment to the position of governor of the Bank of Portugal, however there was not a complete consensus.

A report from the far-right Chega MP Eduardo Teixeira was “positive” recognising both candidates “competence and technical experience” to run Portugal’s central bank.

Álvaro Santos Pereira, 53, will succeed Mário Centeno to head the bank, taking up his official role as from today. (Friday, October 3).
