EDC 1 to invest €7Bn in data centre in Abrantes
A €7Bn data centre project worth almost the same amount of investment from Start Campus in Sines has been earmarked for Abrantes and is scheduled to open in 2028.
The project comes from EDC One, Lda, a company specialising in data centre construction and maintenance.
The data centre is to be developed in three phases and will come on line in the second quarter of 2028 according to the partner of the company behind the project, José Meneses da Silva Moural of EDC One who told ECO Online that the project also had national and foreign partners.
“We have international, national and local partners that we will disclose as soon as it is opportune,” said the businessman from Maia, leaving a clue that these are companies linked to the data center, construction and energy sectors with more than 20 years of experience in both the European and US markets.
The first phase of the investment – which gained media attention for representing almost the same investment value that Start Campus is investing in Sines (€8.5Bn) – will have 300MW and operate from brownfield sites with the abandoned industrial buildings of RPP Solar that will be readapted to receive one of the new buildings.
The plan is to expand the capacity from 300 MW to 800 MW at the end of the third phase. The investor, who also leads Diverstock Investments, confirms that EDC One is a vehicle company created for this particular project, but goes further and details that the term “EDC One” indicates that it is the first investment “of others that we hope will follow”, namely EDC Two and EDC Three.
